She couldn't understand your frustration, that your words always seemed to reach her as if passing through sludge, or as if you were shouting from the bottom of a well. "Why couldn't you look when I asked you to? You missed it now. It's gone forever." This sort of thing stockpiles in a relationship, molehills begin to be the signifiers for mountains. Had she ever listened to you? About anything? Did you really try to warn her?
